My name is Kathy. Obviously I feel strongly about thank you notes!
My Family
I live in Northern California with my wonderful husband and two adorable sons. I want to thank them for allowing me to spend so much time on my laptop!
My Writing Background
I have an M.A. in English Composition and a B.A. in English Literature. I was a technical writer for Netscape, AOL, Sun Microsystems, and CSC Consulting. Before that, I taught computer skills at various businesses and English and Business Skills to adults from all around the world.
And of course, I have written LOTS of thank you notes to friends, family, employers, employees, and even some strangers.
Why I Made This Site
I believe in thank you notes. When I was a kid and my mom told me to write my thank you notes, I groaned and rolled my eyes but once I sat down to write, I secretly kind of enjoyed it. I had my little flowery clipboard and glittery pens and stickers, and of course the darling little notecards– white foldovers with real red embroidery.
Speaking of my mom, she is the real catalyst here. My mom is the queen of thanking. In fact she is well-known for writing thank you notes for thank you notes (which is where I usually draw the line). She can’t think of any exchange of material goods or information that does not merit a thank you note. She was slow to catch on to email and then text but now that she’s into it, she lets those thank you’s fly anywhere, anytime, for any reason, like she’s throwing rice at a wedding. With a mother this exuberant about gratitude, how could some of it not rub off on me?
My style is a little more subdued but I definitely agree that people like to be thanked and should be. I notice when I am not thanked but I’m not offended; I empathize with people who can’t muster the energy to sit down and write that note. But I’ll tell you one thing: After I write a note to someone, I always feel a little lighter. The act of writing that letter reminds me that someone did something nice for me, and that always makes me smile.
But it is hard to get started sometimes, and one day I thought hey, I should keep copies of the thank you notes I write as creative inspiration for my next thank you note. Since I usually type my notes on my computer before handwriting them, that wasn’t difficult. Then I thought, well why not post them online for others to use? I can’t be the only one who needs a little help putting thoughts onto paper. I thought I’d give a website a shot and I’m so glad I did.
